How to Bleed the Brakes on a Four Wheeler

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your four wheeler in top condition. One important aspect of maintenance is bleeding the brakes. Bleeding the brakes helps remove any air bubbles that may have entered the brake lines, ensuring optimal brake performance and safety.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Wrench
  • Clear tubing
  • Brake fluid
  • Clean cloth
  • Bottle or container to collect brake fluid

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Find a level surface to park your ATV and engage the parking brake. Ensure the vehicle is secure before starting the brake bleeding process.
  2. Locate the brake bleeder valve on each wheel. It is usually located on the brake caliper or wheel cylinder.
  3. Start with the brake furthest from the master cylinder. In most cases, this will be the rear brake.
  4. Using a wrench, loosen the brake bleeder valve. Attach one end of the clear tubing to the valve and the other end into a container to collect the brake fluid.
  5. Have a helper sit on the four wheeler and slowly pump the brake pedal a few times, then hold it down firmly.
  6. While the brake pedal is held down, open the brake bleeder valve. You will see brake fluid and air bubbles flowing through the tubing into the container.
  7. Close the valve before the brake pedal is released by your helper. Repeat this process until you see a steady stream of brake fluid without any air bubbles.
  8. Move on to the next brake furthest from the master cylinder and repeat steps 4-7. Continue this process until all four brakes have been bled.
  9. Once all the brakes have been bled, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and top it up if necessary.
  10. Double-check that all bleeder valves are tightly closed and remove the clear tubing.
  11. Wipe away any spilled brake fluid using a clean cloth.
  12. Test the brakes by slowly applying pressure to the brake pedal. Ensure it feels firm and responsive.

Bleeding the brakes on a 4 wheeler may seem daunting at first, but by following these steps, you can ensure proper brake function and enhance your safety on the trails. Remember, if you are unsure or uncomfortable performing this maintenance task, it's always best to consult a professional mechanic.
